Apparel Import Tariffs 2024: A Guide to HS Codes and Duty Rates for Clothing
Many new clothing brands focus only on FOB price and forget about import duties — which can add 5-30% to your landed cost. Here’s how to classify your products and estimate duties correctly.
What Is an HS Code?
The Harmonized System (HS) code is a 6-10 digit number that customs authorities worldwide use to classify products. For apparel, the first 4 digits are globally standardized:
- 6101-6110: Knitted garments (t-shirts, sweaters, knit dresses)
- 6201-6212: Woven garments (shirts, trousers, jackets, dresses)
The remaining digits vary by country. Getting the right code matters — a wrong classification can mean overpaying duties or facing customs penalties.
