If you’re new to apparel manufacturing, the acronyms OEM, ODM, and CMT can be confusing. But choosing the wrong model can cost you months of delays and thousands of dollars. Let’s break them down.
OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer)
You provide: Complete tech pack (design, measurements, fabric, trims, labels) Factory provides: Production only
- Control level: Highest — every detail is your spec
- MOQ: Usually 500-1,000 pcs per style
- Lead time: 4-8 weeks (after sample approval)
- Best for: Established brands with a designer and clear product vision
OEM gives you full creative control but requires you to know exactly what you want. If your tech pack is incomplete, the factory will make assumptions — and they won’t always be right.
ODM (Original Design Manufacturer)
You provide: Brand label and minor customization (colors, prints, logo) Factory provides: Existing designs, patterns, fabric sourcing, production
- Control level: Medium — you pick from catalog styles
- MOQ: As low as 100-300 pcs per style
- Lead time: 2-5 weeks (faster because patterns already exist)
- Best for: Startups, Amazon sellers, brands testing new categories
ODM is the fastest and cheapest way to launch. The trade-off: other brands may be selling similar styles from the same factory.
CMT (Cut, Make, Trim)
You provide: Fabric, trims, labels, patterns — everything physical Factory provides: Labor only (cutting, sewing, finishing)
- Control level: Maximum — you own every material
- MOQ: Flexible (some factories accept 50-100 pcs)
- Lead time: 2-4 weeks
- Best for: Brands with their own fabric suppliers, or very small runs
CMT is the cheapest on labor, but you bear all material sourcing risk. If your fabric arrives late or defective, production stops.

Our Recommendation
- First-time brand: Start with ODM to validate the market, then move to OEM for your second season.
- Growing brand: Use OEM for signature pieces, ODM for basics and accessories.
- Premium brand: CMT gives you maximum control over fabric quality, but requires a dedicated sourcing team.
