OEM vs ODM vs CMT: Which Manufacturing Model Is Right for Your Brand?
If you’re new to apparel manufacturing, the acronyms OEM, ODM, and CMT can be confusing. But choosing the wrong model can cost you months of delays and thousands of dollars. Let’s break them down.
OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer)
You provide: Complete tech pack (design, measurements, fabric, trims, labels) Factory provides: Production only
- Control level: Highest — every detail is your spec
- MOQ: Usually 500-1,000 pcs per style
- Lead time: 4-8 weeks (after sample approval)
- Best for: Established brands with a designer and clear product vision
OEM gives you full creative control but requires you to know exactly what you want. If your tech pack is incomplete, the factory will make assumptions — and they won’t always be right.
